Warri Wolves managers have dismissed claims by Rangers of Enugu that the Flying Antelopes have agreed to pay the transfer fees of Sunday Mba and Chigozie Agbim. Instead, the Delta States sports boss Amaju Pinnick warned that Wolves management would file official international complaint for Rangers disqualification should the Enugu-based team field the players in their Sunday’s CAF Champions League match against Recreativo de Libolo of Angola.
Pinnick told MTNFootball.com that at no point did both sides reach that level as it concerns the players. Mba who scored Nigeria’s winning goal at the final game of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations has made the headlines since about last December as the clubs battle for his ownership.
“It’s not true (that we have agreed). If they field any of those players they should be ready to lose that game,” Pinnick warned.
Teams are usually disqualified from competitions if they field ineligible players.
Rangers chairman Festus Onuh had said in an earlier interview that they would pay the transfer fees for Africa Nations Cup winners Mba and Agbim.
Warri Wolves are demanding a record-setting N12m for Mba after the Nigeria Football Federation ruled that Mba belongs to them.
“We have secured the clearance of three more players to feature in this Sunday’s game and we are ready to pay Warri Wolves their asking price for the services of Sunday Mba and Chigozie Agbim to enhance our chances over the two legs (in the CAF Champions League),” Onuh had said.
Both players have been training with Rangers in Enugu since they returned from South Africa with the Super Eagles in February. The controversy created by the struggle for ownership by the clubs forced the NFF to set up a committee to investigate the matter and broker a deal for the clubs. But it appears that not much has been achieved by the intervention of the NFF as the players have only continued to train in Enugu without featuring in league matches.
Lack of proper documentation of players in the Nigerian league system essentially fuelled the arguments over the players.
Rangers will host Angola’s Recreativo de Libolo this weekend in the CAF Champions League second round and Onuh is hopeful that Rangers will go past the Angolan hurdle.
